Gratitude in the Gator Community

An important tenet of Gaynor is our tight-knit community. Especially around this time of year, as we reflect on what we’re most grateful for, our community values become especially apparent in the classrooms and through service projects.

Victoria Browning Wyeth ’91 has always had to work harder than her peers to rise above her learning differences. Her time at Stephen Gaynor School allowed her to meet some lifelong friends, and although school was still challenging, she is grateful to those who helped her succeed.

Practicing Mindfulness in the Classroom

Recent alumni return to Gaynor

The Office of Alumni Relations, Placement Office, Student Advocacy Coordinator and teachers in the Blue Cluster got together to host a Grad Get-Together for the class of 2018 on November 1. Alumni from the Class of 2018 came back from schools throughout the city from York Prep to Brooklyn Friends.

A “wicked good” Halloween project

This week, Ms. Rubin and Ms. Goldman’s Green Cluster class presented their Halloween research papers to teachers and administrators. Students practiced student advocacy, built executive functioning skills, utilized writing strategies, and practiced public speaking techniques throughout this multi-step assignment.

How to foster a passion for reading in the Middle School? Disrupt Thinking!

At Gaynor, reading specialists and teachers use the Orton-Gillingham approach, morphology, and grammar to teach students the mechanics of reading. Implementing the Disrupting Thinking approach is another layer that moves students from the mechanical to a more holistic engagement with what they read.
