This week, students in the Yellow Cluster brought their history lessons to life as they played the part of immigrants coming to America through Ellis Island. In previous years, students took a field trip to the island, but this year the Yellow Cluster teachers found a creative solution to allow the students to take part in a multisensory exploration of what it was like to arrive in the United States through Ellis Island.

This Reading Challenge Reward Was Worth the Wait!
On May 13, students in the Red, Orange, Yellow, Silver, and Green Clusters received a very long-awaited treat. Head of School Dr. Scott Gaynor, Assistant Head of School Jill Thompson, and Director of Lower Division Donna Logue hand-delivered individually wrapped ice cream to them for meeting their 2020 reading challenge goal! (Yes, you read that correctly — 2020.) In what became an exercise in delayed gratification and promises kept, as well as a celebration of reading, the students finally received their reward!

Research-Based Curriculum Analysis: Executive Functioning Instruction at Gaynor
Understanding a child’s cognitive processing, and specifically executive functioning, is critical to assessing and treating dyslexia, learning, and attention disorders. Researchers Geena Kuriakose, Ph.D. (Brooklyn Learning Center) and Amy Margolis, Ph.D. (Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Brooklyn Learning Center) analyzed executive functioning training at Gaynor.
